Title

Grave of Mary Patton

Description

Mary McKeehan Patton learned how to make gunpowder from her father and then operated a powder mill in Pennsylvania with her husband. They sold it and moved south when the prospect of a British invasion made living there dangerous. They built a new operation on Powder Mill Creek. During the muster of the Overmountain men, she provided 500 pounds of powder to the patriot force.

Mary Patton's grave is a certified site on the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. Overmountain Victory Trail Association members fire a volley at her grave each year during the annual reenactment march.
